Ellis vs Patterson Sep 14th, 1968 Stockholm
Jimmy Ellis was defending his WBA Heavyweight title for the first time after winning the elimination tournament to find a champion after Muhammad Ali's forced retirement. Ellis has just strung together 11 straight wins including big victories over Leotis Martin, Oscar Bonavera and Jerry Quarry in the Elimination Tournament. His overall record was 226-5 with 12 KO's. Floyd Patterson was a two-time heavyweight champ who had fought since 1952. This was his last chance to regain the title. He was coming off a tough loss to Jerry Quarry in a bout many thought Patterson had won. Floyd's overall record was 46-6-1 with 36 KO's. It should be noted that Joe Frazier was the New York state heavyweight champ at the time. Let's see how his controversial fight went.

Official Decision 9-6 Ellis
I was very surprised by the referee's scoring when I first saw this fight. I thought the fight was close, but 9-6 for Ellis was not very accurate. Harold Valen was the referee, and he explained that Ellis was making the fight. He was moving forward, but Floyd was the one landing more. The punch in the 14th round that knocked Ellis down should have been ruled a knockdown, but it wouldn't have changed the winner in Valen's estimation. This fight is one reason the three-judge system is a must in boxing. One referee isn't enough.
